Board-certified family medicine physician Robert Johnson earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1974 and completed his family practice residency at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, in 1977. Since that time he has served in a variety of capacities, including service in private practice and on the faculty of the Department of Family Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center, where he teaches family medicine and sports medicine. He is a founding member and Past-President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and has earned his Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Family Practice. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is a past member of the Board of Trustees of the ACSM.
Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota, serving as Co-Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center. Dr. Johnson’s clinical practice is through the University of Minnesota Physicians at Tria in Eden Prairie.
He is a team physician at the University of Minnesota, Bethel College, College of St. Catherine, University of St. Thomas, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Eden Prairie High School. He serves as medical director for the Edmund Fitzgerald 100 K Ultra and FANS 24-Hour Run and provides medical coverage for the Minnesota State High School League tournaments. Dr. Johnson is on the editorial boards of The Physician and Sports Medicine and Postgraduate Medicine and serves as a manuscript reviewer for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise for the American College of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Johnson was recently named to Mpls/St. Paul magazine's 2007 Top Docs. The annual survey randomly samples licensed and practicing Minnesota physicians about who they consider to be the best in the industry.
